OSN #104 - Keeping your stamps dry?
My goodness we have had some rain, fortunately much of it is falling in the water catchments this time! Please take care of your stamps in these conditions, as humidity and moisture can be a real danger to your lovely stamps. We recently have seen a few collections which have started to deteriorate because of poor storage, especially in damp conditions. If you need any advice on safe storage please feel free to talk to us, and if you have any issues with toning or rust we would be pleased to help.
AUSTRALIAN COLLECTIONS
1. Pre-decimal collection of mint and used stamps from 1927 to 1965, all hinged on hand-drawn album pages in a springback binder. A fairly extensive accumulation of most of the non-roo and non-KGV head commemoratives and definitives from the pre-decimal period in a mixture of mint and used condition. The vast majority of less expensive stamps are present, but also included are some nice higher values such as: 6d brown Kingsford Smith 3x mint and 1x used plus OS overprint x2 mint; 6d large Kookaburra mint; Harbour Bridge OS set of 2 mint; 1/- Victorian Centenary x4 used; 1/- Anzac used; Macarthur set of 4 used; 9d NSW Sesqui mint and used plus 1/- Sth Australia used; £1 thick paper Robes (tone spots); £1 Arms used; 5/- Cattle both papers used; and 10/- Navigator mint and used. Quite a few of the less expensive stamps are present in mint multiples (including some very large blocks or panes), and while condition is a little mixed overall this is a very useful collection. Our list price just for the highlights mentioned above adds up to more than $340, and that doesnt count the hundreds of other stamps also included! Get the whole collection for $249.00 AUSTRALIAN COLONIES
2. New South Wales 1850 1d gooseberry-red Sydney View (SG 10) in fine 4-margin condition. One of the most distinctive shades of this classic issue, this stamp is in superb condition. Get £475 current catalogue value for just view stamp $459.00 3. Victoria 1901-13 £2 blue King Edward VII (ASC 97) in CTO condition with Melbourne cancel. For view stamp $499.00 4. Western Australia Coolgardie Express "camel" stamps, the full set of 3 in mint condition. These unusual local stamps have become extremely popular in recent years, and their scarcity has driven prices higher and higher (I have seen one dealers pricelist offer these at $925!). This set has typical sandy gum, get the set of 3 for only view top value $599.00 KANGAROOS
5. 1d red die IIA "forged double print" only six examples of this forgery of the double print error have been reported, and this is considered to be the finest example of them all. A brilliant and essential item for the kangaroo specialist, this fine stamp is ex-Gray and available for view stamp $1899.00 6. 1d red die IIA (plate H) JBC monogram bottom right corner block of 12 in mint hinged condition. Some creases and one torn unit (R49) are mostly well away from the monogram, and as the ACSC states the "white scratched through words of value" variety is present in position 58 as usual. A corner strip of 3 of this pane is catalogued at $600, so surely a larger multiple such as this should be catalogued even higher! Get the block of 12 with selvedge for view block $379.00 7. 3d olive-green first wmk large OS die I/II pair in well-centered condition with single large cds. There are a couple of short perfs on this horizontal pair but the cancel is well clear of the distinctive die position at bottom left. For view pair $89.00 8. 9d violet first wmk "break in right frame" variety (ACSC 24f) in top left corner positional pair. As well as being a very clear example of this variety, both stamps are clean and entirely unhinged! Catalogued at $425 per stamp without considering the variety (and varieties on this issue are valued at almost double the standard stamp), this pair is priced to sell at the relatively low price of view pair $1099.00 9. 9d violet first wmk punctured small OS (SG O24) in used condition, clean with full perfs and centered to bottom. Only view stamp $39.00 10. 9d violet CofA wmk Ash imprint block of four (ACSC 29zb) in clean mint lightly hinged condition, with one faint vertical crease affecting two units visible only from the reverse. Now catalogued at $350, this fresh block is yours for just view block $199.00 11. 2/- brown third wmk (SG 41) in used condition, with single cds $25.00 12. 5/- grey and yellow second wmk (SG 30) a good quality example of this difficult-to-find stamp. Nice view stamp $399.00 13. 5/- grey and yellow second wmk punctured OS (SG O37) in well-centered mint hinged condition. This is a lovely and clean example of this early kangaroo even without the duty plate variety, and there is even a "hole" in the right leg which only adds to its appeal! For view stamp $1275.00 18. 10/- grey and pale pink CofA wmk (SG 136) in MUH condition. MUH examples of this stamp have been selling for more than $1600 at auction recently, however it is our pleasure to offer this for just view stamp $999.00 19. £1 grey third wmk (SG 75) in nicely centered mint lightly hinged condition, with partial Harrison imprint at bottom. The ACSC states that this position should have a retouched bottom frame (53l), however this example does not. Complete imprint pairs are catalogued at $4500 (and full blocks of four are even scarcer with a catalogue value of $15,000!), so this single is the closest most will ever get to owning an imprint of this high value. Nice and clean and totally fault-free, for view stamp $999.00 20. £2 black and red third wmk SPECIMEN in mint lightly hinged condition with just one short perf at top right. 71. China reprints collection a privately printed folder containing reprints of many famous (and expensive!) Cultural Revolution sets, such as: 1967 Long Live Maos Thought set of 11 (incl. 2 strips of 5), 1967 Poems of Mao set of 14, 1968 Instructions from Mao strip of 5, 1968 Whole Country is Red single. There are more than 10 sets in total, and each is printed with a diagonal bar in the bottom right corner so there is no risk of confusing them with the originals. However given the value of the genuine sets, this is the closest most will get to filling those spaces! I have seen this folder advertised overseas for $150 or more, here it is only $69.00 72. Great Britain collection of mixed mint and used stamps from 1854 to 1986, all hinged on hand-drawn album pages in a black springback binder. The pre-decimal section of this album is mostly used with several better items present, such as: over 150 Queen Victoria stamps in heavily used condition, including spacefiller example of 1d black with 4 margins and red Maltese Cross cancel; 1867-80 wmk Spray of Rose 9d used x5, 10d and 6d grey, 1876 8d orange; 1883-84 2/6 lilac and 5/- rose wmk Anchor white paper both used, 1883-84 6d green x2 used and 1/- green used; King Edward VII 2/6 x2 and 5/- with parcel-type cancels; over 90 KGV stamps mostly used including 3x 2/6 and 3x 5/- Seahorses, 1924 Empire Exhibition x3 sets mint; and more than 200 KGVI and QEII pre-decimals up to £1 also used. The decimal section is much cleaner and mostly mint, with dozens and dozens of sets present from 1970 through to 1986 including high values up to £2 and £5 values. Condition of the early stamps is towards the less-fine end of the range, but naturally this is well-accounted for in the price! I have not had time to catalogue this fully, but an extremely conservative estimate states there is more than £6000 value in the pre-decimals alone. Throw in hundreds of good condition decimals with a face value (mint) in excess of £95, and this collection will walk of the shelves at only $899.00 73. Papua New Guinea collection from 1952 to 2000 in MUH condition, all housed on Seven Seas hingeless pages in a blue binder with matching slipcase. This collection is complete as per Seven Seas except for the Birds of Paradise overprints (both first and second prints) and 1960 Postage Dues, so it does have every other issue in including 1952 definitives (£1 very lightly hinged, rest MUH) and 1994-95 provisionals all MUH. PNG is very popular and this collection is priced to sell, get all the stamps plus a Seven Seas album worth over $300 for $899.00
