OSN #105 - Beautiful to see!!

We are absolutely thrilled to offer in the following pages an amazing range of stamps. Some of these we have owned before, others are new to our stock. The quality and rarity of some lots has to be seen to be believed, and Damien and I have thoroughly enjoyed preparing this list for you. We hope you enjoy reading it, and don’t delay if anything catches your eye because I fear we will not have many of them for long...

KANGAROOS

23. 3d black plate proof block of 4 (ACSC 12PP(1)A). Believed to be printer’s make-ready proofs, only approximately 40 units of this item survive and generally they were poorly printed with partial voids and paper flaws common. The ACSC states that multiples are scarce and that "very few blocks" survive. Therefore this lot comprises 10% of the known units, and is even more significant because it includes a die I/II pair! This is a truly magnificent item that would enhance any specialist exhibit or collection. Immaculate pedigree (this piece was in the Arthur Grey collection), for view block $4749.00
24. ½d green no monogram strip of three with double perfs all round what a stunning exhibition piece: this combines the rarity of a no monogram strip of 3 with double perforations on all four sides throughout the block. In fact, this is the only recorded no monogram piece with double perfs all round. Mint without gum and with just one or two trivial paper flaws visible mainly from the back, this unique piece has excellent provenance (ex-Legge, Gray) and is available for view block $2899.00
25. 1d red first wmk CA monogram double perf in mint hinged condition. This is another stunning item, with double perfs on three sides of each stamp and CA monogram in the selvedge. Small gummed strips of paper have been used to reinforce the double perf, and it is believed this was done by the Post Office. This superb piece is one of only two known CA monogram pieces with double perfs, and with well-known provenance (ex-Kilfoyle, Gray) it is a premium showpiece. For view item $1749.00
26. 2d grey third wmk (SG 35) in fine mint unhinged condition with good centering $35.00
27. 2½d indigo first wmk (SG 4) in clean MUH condition. For view stamp $125.00
28. 2½d indigo third wmk punctured OS (SG O44) in MUH condition. Very clean and nicely centered too, for view stamp $149.00
29. 2½d indigo second wmk (SG 25) in well-centered MUH condition $179.00
30. 4d orange first wmk (SG 6) in nicely centered used condition, with a couple of small pin-pricks at bottom. Better than average used $19.00
31. 5d chestnut punctured OS (SG O22) in commercially used condition $29.00
32. 6d ultramarine first wmk "retouched second E of PENCE" (ACSC 17e) in unused condition without gum. One of the most sought-after varieties, this is characterised by a clear circular deformation of the last "E" of "PENCE", which was caused by poor workmanship in retouching. This example is in pretty good condition with excellent colour and perfs, fair centering and a small pencil notation on the reverse. Now catalogued at $3000 mint, this example is available for view stamp $1749.00
33. 6d ultramarine second wmk "double perf" what a spectacular variety this is, with double perfs on three sides and selvedge at top! As an added attraction it’s also entirely MUH, making this a wonderful showpiece for any serious kangaroo study. For view stamp $1699.00
34. 9d violet first wmk punctured small OS (SG O24) in very well-centered MLH condition. Simply perfect in every respect, you won’t find a finer example view stamp $299.00
35. 1/- emerald first wmk inverted (ACSC 30a) in postally used condition. Much scarcer than CTO, this example is nicely centered for the issue too view stamp $275.00
36. 1/- emerald first wmk inverted (SG 11w) in CTO condition with gum, centered to one corner as is usual for this variety. For $49.00
37. 2/- brown first wmk (SG 12) in excellent mint hinged condition. This fine stamp is yours for only view stamp $299.00

39. 2/- brown first wmk (SG 12) in used condition, centered to left with a couple of short perfs but this does have a light cancel. Only $49.00
40. 2/- maroon small multi wmk (SG 110) in well-centered mint condition. What a stunner this is, and it’s very lightly hinged as well. A premium stamp view stamp $159.00
41. 5/- grey and yellow first wmk (SG 13) in CTO condition ex-Melbourne. Available for view stamp $149.00
42. 5/- grey and yellow second wmk OS (SG O37) in commercially used condition, clean and well-centered with an untidy cancel as you’d expect on such a high value stamp. Only view stamp $99.00
43. 5/- grey and yellow third wmk (SG 43) in used condition. Nicely centered with a very slight crease at bottom right, available for view stamp $99.00
44. 5/- grey and yellow small multi wmk (SG 111) in fine CTO condition with gum $99.00
45. 10/- grey and pink small multi wmk (SG 112) in superb mint lightly hinged condition. Excellent centering, colour and perfs make this a premium stamp, and there is even a "gash" flaw in the roo’s neck for added variety! Some dealers now charge over $1100 for examples of this quality, but our price is just view stamp $899.00
46. 10/- grey and pink small multi wmk SPECIMEN in well-centered mint hinged condition. For view stamp $349.00
47. £2 black and red small multi wmk SPECIMEN in well-centered MLH condition. We offered two of these in our last list and they went quickly, this will too at view stamp $299.00

AUSTRALIAN KGV

48. 1d rose-red large multi wmk (ACSC 73B) in lightly hinged mint condition. One of the rarest of all 1d red shades, even the Specialists’ catalogue states that "mint stamps are very rare". A stamp such as this would form the centrepiece of almost any collection, and this example is in good condition too as you would expect. Naturally this is supplied with a certificate of authenticity (2003 Drury certificate) and it’s available for view stamp $6999.00
49. 1d red "CNE flaw early state" (ACSC 71(4)p) in used condition. In contrast to the two stamps below this is an early example of the "CNE for ONE" and it’s nicely centered with cancellation that does not obscure the variety at all. Supplied with a 2004 Drury certificate of expertisation, available for view stamp $1749.00
50. 1d scarlet-red "CNE flaw late state"(ACSC 71(4)p) in well-centered used condition. A beautiful and clear example of the later state of this key variety, it also has the tiny red dot at top right as nearly every example has. A great-looking stamp with just the barest hint of a crease visible only from the reverse, this stamp is available for view stamp $1749.00
51. 1d scarlet-red "CNE flaw very late state"(ACSC 71(4)p) in very lightly used condition. The "O" of "ONE" is so obliterated on this stamp that it really should be called the "INE for ONE" flaw! The very light cancel means the variety is not obscured in any way, and its extremely late state would be a wonderful addition to any collection seeking to show how this flaw progressed. A couple of minor issues at the bottom corners do not affect the rarity of this stamp, which is available for view stamp $1749.00
52. 1d red single wmk die III (SG 53) in mint hinged condition, centered well to one side and therefore priced much lower than usual at only $29.00

This almost qualifies as a no watermark variety (catalogued at $5000!), however the watermark line is visible just one millimetre from the top perfs. Nevertheless "line watermarks" like this are still scarce, and this example is in good condition with the plated variety 72(4)j as well. Available for view stamp $499.00
55. 1d carmine-rose die II rough paper OS (ACSC 72Q(1)fb) in mint very very lightly hinged condition. A lovely and clean example of this stamp with pristine original gum, with 2001 Drury certificate. Only view stamp $569.00

60. 1d rose-carmine CA and JBC monograms from plate 4, each in full strips of 6 in mint hinged condition. The CA monogram strip includes "RA joined" variety (ACSC 71(4)j) and the JBC monogram is state 3 with "roo’s tongue out" (71(4)r) variety in position 56 (position 60 is where "run N of ONE" should be, but it appears to have been corrected on this particular block). Condition is generally good with nice colour and centering and only very slight toning. Both for $1749.00
61. 1d carmine-red die II single-line perf (ACSC 70A(1)f) in fine used condition.
