OSN #109 - Lest We Forget
Another short week due to Anzac Day this Friday, so we hope you will have some spare time to look through this list. As always we have been hunting far and wide for interesting new material, some of which is detailed below. We hope there is something tempting for you in this selection, but if you are after any particular items or areas please let us know what you want. We may just have it!
COLLECTIONS
1. Australian collection comprising six volumes of mostly MUH stamps from 1996 to 2001, all housed on Seven Seas hingeless pages. Apart from a handful of earlier stamps this is all MUH and 99% complete for the standard issues, and it includes loads of extras such as booklets, self-adhesives, blocks, gutter pairs/strips, specimens, sheetlets and more all also housed on dedicated Seven Seas "optional extra" illustrated hingeless pages. There are too many extras to list them all, but in addition to the standard "one of each" I noted 1966 Birds and Navigators MUH, 1971 Christmas block of 7 MUH, 1986 Papal Visit gutter strip of 10, 1988 Sydpex gutter strip of 10, 1990 Austamp gutter strip of 10, 1991 Across Town labels set of 2, 1993 Women in Parliament normal and reverse panes of 25, 1994 Specimens set of 5,1994 ATM pane of 25, plus loads and loads of booklets, collector pack items and much much more. The MUH face value of the "standard" Seven Seas layout adds up to over $1000, and there is more than $850 face value in MUH extras as well. Throw in Seven Seas hingeless pages that retail for well in excess of $500 and this collection is a brilliant find at just $1299.00 2. Australian decimal booklet collection of more than 95 booklets from 1966 to 1998, all housed on a mix of Seven Seas illustrated hingeless pages and FDC leaves in a black binder. This collection includes quite a few scarce booklets in good condition, such as: 1966 4c red QEII "Registered Post"; 5c on 4c 50c temporary booklet plus 50c and $1 permanent booklets; both types of Vietnam booklets; $1 Prime Ministers; and Parramatta booklet with 20c Yellow Robin. From 1980 onwards a wide range of standard booklets plus paper and overprint varieties are included, too many to list here in full (eg. there are 14 different overprints!). Condition is generally excellent and these have a retail value of more than $1100, get them all for only $549.00 3. Australian FDC collection More than 395 covers housed in four Cumberland albums, covering the period 1970 to 1993. incl. 1970 Expo, 1970 Royal Visit and 1970 Cook long cover all unaddressed, Cook small with typed address and 1971 Christmas. Condition is generally excellent with minor toning on only a handful of items. All four albums for $359.00 4. Australian FDC collection a great starter album with more than 100 covers from 1966 to 1984 all housed in a blue Cumberland FDC album. All are in good condition apart from the first handful, start yourself off in FDCs for just $49.00 5. Australian Replica Card collection of more than 30 different reproduction cards of classic Australian stamps and essays, all housed in a specially produced album with green Seven Seas binder. All cards in top condition $99.00 6. New Zealand collection of mint stamps from 1953 to 1989, all housed on Seven Seas hingeless illustrated pages in a red binder. This collection is 100% complete as per Seven Seas, and it is almost entirely unhinged including all the better items such as Queen on Horseback high values (which sell for $150 on their own!), QEII pre-decimal Officials set of 9 and 1960 Pictorials MUH set of 23 (retail $120). Also included are Health minisheets in MUH condition, including the following sets in top form: 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966 (retail $217 for these 9 sets alone). Condition is mostly excellent with only a very small number of items toned, however none of the highlights mentioned above have any faults whatsoever. The album pages are almost entirely as new too, and they would cost more than $200 if you were to purchase them separately. The more I look at this lot the better I like it, because it includes so many stamps that even a reseller would do very well breaking this lot into sets for individual sale! But if you want a little more encouragement, it also includes several Ross Dependency and Lighthouse issues as well! Get all of the above for just $1099.00 AUSTRALIAN COLONIES

Available for view item $299.00 19. 2½d indigo second wmk double perf a mint block of four (3 units unhinged) punctured WA, with variety "double perforations three sides" on the top two units. One of the most sought-after varieties, this is characterised by a clear circular deformation of the last "E" of "PENCE", which was caused by poor workmanship in retouching. This example is in pretty good condition with excellent colour and perfs, fair centering and a small pencil notation on the reverse. Now catalogued at $3000 mint, this example is available for view stamp $1749.00 25. 1/- emerald first wmk inverted CA monogram strip of 3 in fresh CTO. Full strips of three of this monogram are rare, and this example is even rarer as it is inverted watermark as well! A beautiful looking item with great colour and full gum, the CA monogram trimmed as is usual with this issue. Non-inverted strips of 3 are catalogued at $6000 mint (not priced used), and there are very few items of this type known. This superb wmk inverted piece is available for just view item $4749.00 26. 2/- maroon CofA wmk "break in left frame" variety (ACSC 40m) in well-centered MUH condition with selvedge at right $25.00 27. 10/- grey and pale pink CofA wmk (SG 136) in clean MUH condition view stamp $949.00 28. £1 chocolate and dull blue third wmk What a fine example of this shade, with great centering and perfs and very distinctive colour as well. With one natural inclusion this is a superb item view stamp $3299.00 29. £1 grey third wmk (SG 75) in nicely centered mint lightly hinged condition, with partial Harrison imprint at bottom. The ACSC states that this position should have a retouched bottom frame (53l), however this example does not. Complete imprint pairs are catalogued at $4500 (and full blocks of four are even scarcer with a catalogue value of $15,000!), so this single is the closest most will ever get to owning an imprint of this high value. Nice and clean and totally fault-free, for view stamp $979.00 30. £1 grey third wmk (SG 75) in VFUWC condition. Mint examples of the Cooke printing carmine-pink are scarce enough, but this attractive example also has the listed variety as well. 1d green CofA wmk crinkle flaw block of 20 this unusual item, comprising two complete vertical columns of 20 with selvedge top and bottom in mint condition, comes with a detailed typed explanation of what the crinkle flaw represents: "It consists of a nick in the bottoms of 16, 22, 28, 34, 40 and 46. It is not a roller flaw as it is not constant in position. It represents damage to the plate and occurred late 1934 or early 1935 and was quickly noticed and repaired. This specimen was printed from a clean plate early in the days run. There is no sign of compartment marks. Nevertheless there is a marked absence of minor flaws common to CofA printings." This description very accurately describes the bumps seen in the bottom of six of the units! I cannot find a mention of this variety in the current ACSC, however a pencil notation at the bottom states this is ex-Charles Hosking collection.
